The following is information about Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

The author is Mark Flanigan.
1.0 Definition:
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, also called Lupus, or SLE, is a chronic autoimmune disease
that can be debilitating and on occasions fatal. It occurs, as all autoimmune diseases do,
as a result of the body's own immune system attacking the cells and tissue as if they
were a foreign invader. This results in localised or systemic inflammation and tissue damage.
The condition most often affects the organs and tissue of the heart, joints, skin, lungs,
blood vessels, liver, kidneys and nervous system. However, it is not limited to these, and
can actually affect any part of the body. The disease is unpredictable, with flare ups of
illness then followed by periods of remission. The condition is most common in women,
particularly of non-Caucasian background, so is more common amongst certain ethnic groups,
including blacks, Hispanics and Asians. It is a relatively rare disease, affecting between
1.5 to 5 in 10,000 of the general population. Lupus can occur at any age, but is found
primarily (in approximately 90 percent of cases) in women of child-bearing age. Current Lupus
treatment is symptomatic only, comprising mainly of antiinflammatory corticosteroids and also
immunosuppressants. As of 2007 there is no known cure for the condition, as is the case for
most autoimmune conditions.
